I’ve often fantasized about what life would be like if I could just roll out of bed and land right into the capable hands of a professional makeup artist. While this lofty goal might take a little bit of time, I have stumbled upon the most wonderful of treasures…the free online tutorials of Lisa Eldridge - an incredibly talented and celebrated makeup artist out of the UK.

Ms. Eldridge’s advice, product recommendations and detailed how-to’s simply can’t be missed. She is very much at the top of her game, having worked with the most beloved fashion brands on commercial shoots and runway shows, as well as with the likes of Cameron Diaz, Liz Hurley, Kate Moss, Heidi Klum, Cate Blanchet, Demi Moore and countless other beauties. Her marvelous tutorials are inviting, easy to follow and so helpful.

I recommend watching the videos before bed, so you can drift into a slumber of beauty, creativity, English accents, and glamour and wake up the next morning inspired to discover an even more spectacular you.

Spruce Approved: Carrot and Ginger Soup

I recently ventured into the exciting (yet admittedly intimidating) world of cooking and baking. I quickly tricked those around me into thinking that I was born with a true gift of soup making after I prepared the following Carrot and Ginger Soup. This soup is mouth-watering good!

The smooth consistency, delicious taste, and fall-appropriate color palette all make this the soup of the season. My Great Aunt (practically a five-star chef in her own right) passed this simple and scrumptious recipe down to me, so I shall now pass it down to my dear Spruce readers. As I continue on my culinary journey, please look for future posts on some of the best gadgets and savory recipes intended to help spruce up your kitchen and meals.

Carrot and Ginger Soup

Ingredients

6 Tablespoons Unsalted Butter

1 Large Yellow Onion (Chopped)

¼ Cup Ginger (Finely Chopped)

3 Cloves Garlic (Minced)

7 Cups Chicken Stock (Vegetable Stock May Also Be Used)

1 Cup Dry White Wine

1 ½ Pounds Carrots (Cut Into ½ Inch Pieces)

2 Tablespoons Fresh Lemon Juice

A pinch of Curry Powder

Salt and Pepper to Taste

Chives and Parsley to Taste

Instructions

Melt the butter and then add onions, ginger and garlic. Sauté for approximately 15-20 Minutes. Add the chicken stock, wine, and carrots. Heat to boil and then simmer uncovered on medium for 45 minutes. Puree the soup and season with lemon, curry powder, salt, and pepper. Enjoy!!

Spruce Up Your Airplane Seat

If you’re an avid traveler and somewhat of a control freak (it’s okay, you’re in good company!!), then you might just want to check out SeatGuru by TripAdvisor, the website that experienced travelers swear by, before you secure seats on your next flight. Simply select your airline (and plane model) and the interior layout of the aiplane will appear on the page.

You can see how many total seats there are on the plane, how many seats there are per row, and the dimensions of the seats in each cabin. All seats are color-coated as “standard seats,” “good seats,” and “poor seats.”

If you place your mouse over the “good” and “poor” seats, you will even see descriptions as to why they were singled out. For example, on my last flight I avoided seat 10a (my first choice), because all seats in row 10 on that particular Boeing airplane on United Airlines customarily don't recline. Instead, I opted for a "good seat" where my entire row had a few more inches of legroom than the standard seats.

I am now a devout follower of the Tracy Anderson Mat Workout. You’ll find that Anderson is not peppy in the typical DVD fitness instructor sense (hooray for that!!). It's as though Anderson is right there with you guiding you through her intense mat routine. Her demeanor is kind and supportive, but in a more subtle way that I appreciate.

I should also note that you’ll have to look past the fact that Anderson occasionally undercounts (this can be torture when leg raises are involved!) and sometimes forgets to mention when she switches to a different exercise. I suggest that you watch this DVD the whole way through at least once before attempting to do it yourself. The sets are not intricate, but they are likely to be challenging for beginners and pros alike. Once you have followed the DVD for about a week, you'll get used to Anderson’s instruction and the sets will seem much more bearable. The amazing results you will soon see will greatly outweight any slight stylistic imperfections the DVD contains.

Spruce's Overview of the Mat Workout:

(Approximately 60 minutes long)

Warm Up - Anderson starts out with a short warm up. I encourage that you do a version of your own warm up beforehand, as Anderson skimps on stretching to allow time for the more laborious activities to follow.

Standing Legs – You will need a regular dining room chair to accomplish this series of rigorous leg, thigh and butt lifts. Please don’t let the number of repetitions discourage you. You might not be able to finish all of the sets your first few weeks, but I guarantee that you will get stronger and more able as the weeks (even days) go by. You'll feel a huge sense of accomplishment when you're able to get through the whole routine without stopping!

Standing Abdominals – This might be the most difficult series to grasp. Not necessarily in the sense of it being too physically demanding (it’s really not), but in the sense that it actually takes awhile to get used to doing the moves as Anderson does them. We recommend that you practice some of these sets in front of the mirror. Once you get the hang of it, these standing abdominal exercises almost feel like you’re dancing. Yes, they’re actually fun! The key is to isolate your core. The standing abdominal exercises help you achieve a sexy and defined stomach, not an intense six-pack stomach that traditional crunches often provide.

Arms – These are absolutely killer!!! When I say killer, I mean that in the most loving way possible. Anderson guarantees that if you stick with her standing arms series (the majority of the series calls on you to continuously keep your arms stretched out from side-to-side while doing small lifts and circular motions), then you will absolutely lose the beloved “grandma arms” that we all hate. My arms have always been my weakest area, and I must say that I have already seen tremendous results from doing these regularly. They truly and honestly work.

Arms With Weights – Anderson continues to exhaust the arms with a series of exercises involving 1-3 pound weights. She asks that you not use weights heavier than 3 pounds, because anything heavier might help create bulk. While these weights are not necessarily heavy, it’s not really about the weight; it’s all in the number of repetitions. Trust us – regardless of how strong/toned you think your arms are, you will be dying towards this end of this portion.

Legs (Floor) – The next series calls for you to lie down on a mat, towel, or carpet. You continue to exhaust your leg, thigh and butt muscles on the ground for a series of leg-firming and butt-firming lifts.

Abdominals (Floor) – You continue to work your abs on the floor through a series of Pilates-inspired sets that definitely work the lower and upper abs. You will feel a nice burn at the end.

Cool Down – Again, Anderson skimps on the cool down and stretching portion. We recommend stretching on your own in addition to Anderson’s cool down.

If you buy this DVD (roughly $30) and stick with the program for at least one month, four-to-six times a week, I guarantee that you will feel great and see noticeable results (you will be shocked!).

As always, maintain a healthy diet and try to get in four-to-five days of cardio per week. The Mat Workout will sometimes leave you breathless, but it does not replace cardio and should always be done in conjunction with a cardio program. You can tone and shape your muscles, but you need to do the cardio to shed actual fat.

Anderson also sells a set of popular Dance Cardio DVDs. She recommends that you do these dance cardio DVDs along with her mat workout to see maximum restults. I wasn't as impressed with these DVDs, but they are sure to be effective if you’re able to keep up with the fast-paced moves (and if you have ample space in your home to accommodate all of the jumping around). I prefer to do cardio on my own either outside or at the gym on the elliptical machine, but some individuals might really benefit from her cardio instruction as well.

Spruce tip: While I definitely recommend purchasing the Mat Workout first, you should also invest in Tracy Anderson’s Post-Pregnancy DVD (even if you haven’t recently given birth, the DVD will do wonders for your abs and thighs). If you become a fan, then you might even want to invest in her Perfect Design Series Set. This series is a set of three DVDs that also works the legs, thighs, butt, arms and abdominal muscle groups (although she doesn’t place as much emphasis on the arms as she does in the other two DVDs). Keeping your routine fresh is a vital part of the process, so if you find yourself becoming too used to Anderson’s exercises over time, then it would behoove you to get all five DVDs and alternate them for the best results.

Spruce Up Your Workout Playlist: Summer 2010

Since it’s officially the first day of summer, why not dust off your old workout playlist and spruce it up accordingly? There's really no better way to stay motivated and inspired while working out than to have an energizing playlist set the mood. I usually keep my tried and true favorites in constant rotation (see the original workout playlist post from January for some examples) but, in order to sustain my interest, it’s absolutely essential to update song selections quite often. Happy sweating!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few months, you’ve already heard this track. It’s a catchy summer song that’ll just make you want to get up and move.

2. Dancing On My Own – Robyn

Fresh off of her new album Body Talk Pt. 1, Dancing On My Own is by all accounts the album’s strongest song. It’s similar to her hit With Every Heartbeat in the sense that the song mixes real and honest emotion with killer beats. Dancing On My Own will not only inspire you with it’s dance club sound, but the lyrical content and subsequent delivery will speak to your heart – something I find the best workout songs usually do.

3. Make Me Wanna Die – The Pretty Reckless

A rocking song from the Kick-Ass movie soundtrack. Try not to let your judgment of Taylor Momsen (yes, Little J / Raccoon Eyes, AKA Jenny Humphrey, from Gossip Girl!!) singing lead vocals get in the way. Momsen actually delivers a surprisingly strong sound. This song has just enough angsty grunge-pop (not to mention a great chorus) to earn a spot on this list.

4. Liberty Walk – Miley Cyrus

Oh Miss Miley how Spruce loves thee! Liberty Walk continues Cyrus’ recent celebration of independence and liberation. Crank this tune up and embark on your own Liberty Walk.

5. Party – Love Arcade

This track will take you back to your college days. It’s silly, but catchy. “Just try not to get carded.”

6. Commander – Kelly Rowland (feat. David Guetta)

Kelly Rowland has really found her niche in the Euro pop-dance world. Following up her huge hit with David Guetta When Love Takes Over, the two have collaborated again to produce this pulsating dance song. The more you listen to it, the more it’ll grow on you.

7. Crazy Progressive – Kaci Battaglia

Tracy Anderson, celeb trainer to the stars, recently tweeted that she has found that power of this song is really unparalleled in its ability to get women into the cardio zone. If you haven’t heard of Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, then you really need to get familiar! Potter’s voice recalls a more hard-edged Patty Griffin or even Janis Joplin. Paris (Ooh La La) is a quintessential strut song. It’s sexy, full of attitude, and it just has that something special that I can’t get enough of.

9. Cinderella Man – Eminem

Emimen’s Recovery album is such an accomplishment. While there are a handful of workout playlist-worthy songs on the album, the song that initially hit me the hardest was Cinderella Man. One of my all-time favorite workout tunes is ‘Till I Collapse, off of The Eminem Show, and many critics are dubbing this song as its sequel. The beats are similar, which in this case is a very good thing, and Eminem’s fast-paced and forceful lyrical delivery make this a true standout among many gems.

10. When She Turns 18 – Christian TV

Christian Berishaj of Love Arcade (see number five on this list) has gone solo in a big way with When She Turns 18. Some critics have labeled this song as a synth-pop version of John Mayers’ Daughters. I definitely see the likeness in the theme, but the approach and sound are entirely different. Hey – if Britney Spears herself calls this song her favorite of the summer, then you know it's got to be good!

11. Undo It – Carrie Underwood

“You had my heart. Now I want it back. I’m starting to see everything you lack. I wanna undo it.”

Underwood doing what she does best - singing with attitude about a former flame who did her wrong.

12. Green Light (Freemasons Remix) - Beyonce

While this isn’t a new release (the original Green Light is from a 2006 Beyonce album), Freemasons Remix is fresh and feisty.

13. Burn it to the Ground – Nickelback

Yet another intense rock song with a super catchy hook and chorus from Nickelback. Whether you love them or you love to hate them, there’s really no denying that this song will get you and your heartbeat going.

14. The Remedy – Blake Lewis

Blake Lewis’s most recent ventures have him diving headfirst into dance songs reminiscent of the late 80s and early 90s. His latest album, Heartbreak on Vinyl, is actually really good and brings to mind some early Pet Shop Boys releases. Gone is any lingering American Idol cheese or gloss, and in is a fresh sound that deserves more fanfare.

15. Remedy – Little Boots

Another Remedy!! This dance song (with substance) was widely successful in the UK. According to Little Boots herself, this song is about dancing and music being a remedy to some kind of poison in your life.

16. Goldfrapp – Rocket (Tiesto Radio Edit)

This song is bright, poppy, and has ’80′s synthesizers. We should all be excited to blast off on this journey.

Southland - A Show To Watch

I am known to be quite the scaredy cat when it comes to violence on television and in the movies. I figure, if I am going spend precious hours of my life in front of a screen, then whatever I am watching had better make me laugh or at least lift my spirits. However, on a whim last year I decided to watch the Los Angeles-based cop drama Southland. While the show is indeed quite graphic and gritty in nature, the superb acting, character development and appealing storylines truly had me hooked from the very first episode.

What sets Southland apart from other cop dramas on television, is that it refuses to tie everything up neatly at the end of each episode. Certain cases and mysteries can span a number of episodes, and sometimes they are never completely resolved. Similarly, potential romances, character arcs or relationships are not always realized as one might predict. The characters are not easily classified because they all have their redeeming qualities, but they also have their distinct flaws and secrets. In other words, the show is just as unpredictable and complex as our own lives which makes it come across as refreshingly honest and authentic.

Southland, co-created by John Wells of ER and The West Wing fame, is filmed in an innovative, more intimate, way; making it seem as though one is actually watching the action as it is happening. The cast and crew pay great attention to detail, working with real Los Angeles cops, often hiring former gang members as extras, and filming all over the city; from gang-ridden streets, to streets full of Bentleys. The mysteries and crimes depicted on the show are just as varied, ranging from horrific gang violence, to high-end jewel heists, to car chases, to celebrities behaving badly.

Southland’s cast is quite large for a television show. While all of the actors have had their standout scenes, there are no obvious stars, as they are all given room to shine. Some of these fine actors include…

The wonderful Michael Cudlitz plays tough-talking patrol officer John Cooper, a twenty-year veteran officer who we later find out has a dangerous addiction to pain medication and also happens to be gay.

Shawn Hatosy portrays Detective Sammy Bryant, whose tumultuous life with his new wife Tammy (played by an excellent Emily Bergl) and their poorly-behaved former drug-sniffing police dog is highlighted. Bryant’s home life is often hot-tempered, chaotic, and sometimes even humorous, but we also see his more gentle side when he befriends and protects a young inner-city girl whose life is in danger once she is picked as a witness to gang-related criminal activity.

Tom Everett Scott plays Russell Clarke, a good-looking man who has dreams of becoming a writer. Clarke, who sometimes appears a little too cool and collected, establishes a flirtatious friendship with the sister of a recent murder victim, which causes problems within his already flailing marriage.

Benjamin McKenzie plays rookie police officer Benjamin Sherman who comes from a wealthy family with upper-crust entertainment industry connections, but he keeps to himself and is still somewhat of mystery. Sherman is a man of few words; but as the episodes progress, we learn more about his background and his motivations for becoming a police officer.

The tremendous Regina King, who plays Lydia Adams, works alongside Detective Clarke as a tough-as-nails (with a compassionate heart) detective who lives and breathes her work and thus struggles to make romantic relationships and friendships last.

Unfortunately, Southland became one of the first casualties of the 2009 fall lineup on the Jay Leno-dominated NBC. The show’s cancellation occurred mere weeks prior to its intended premiere and caused shockwaves amongst critics and fans alike. In fact, NBC executives were flooded with letters, phone calls and e-mails demanding the return of their beloved gritty cop drama.

Extended TNT promo for Southland

While the show will not return to network TV, cable channel TNT, a burgeoning pioneer for courageous, well-written dramas such as The Closer, has given it a new home. TNT is in the midst of airing the first seven episodes previously aired on NBC last year, all with new, unseen and uncensored segments. Once the seven episodes have aired, TNT plans to air the additional episodes that were shot for Southland’s second season, and filmed prior to its abrupt cancellation. If these new episodes generate interest and first-class ratings (watch the show, people!!), then Southland could very well return with more new episodes in the not-so-distant future.

Haiti Earthquake Relief - List of Places to Donate

On Tuesday, January 12, 2010, Haiti was hit by a massive earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale, causing the collapse of buildings, including a hospital, and instigating widespread panic. More than 100,000 are feared dead, and thousands have been left homeless in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince and are now without food, clean water and proper medical care. Already the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti truly needs our help.

The loss of life is utterly devastating, but we must now think of the survivors who need medical attention, food, water and shelter. In times like these, we absolutely must help! If you have the means to donate, and practically all of us can part with at least a few dollars, please click on the “read more” link below to find a list of reputable organizations.

Please also send positive thoughts and prayers to those who are searching for loved ones, have lost loved ones, or are currently living through this nightmare. Positive energy helps much more than we realize, and it is definitely needed in the hearts of the survivors and rescuers.

The American Red Cross has sent money, supplies and staff to Haiti to support relief efforts there after the devastating earthquake, which caused catastrophic damage and loss of life.

The White House and President Obama sent a mass e-mail out to millions yesterday and urged people to donate to the Red Cross.

Please text “HAITI” to “90999” and a donation of $10 will be given automatically to the Red Cross to help with relief efforts and charged to your cell phone bill. Your donations will help provide immediate relief as well as long-term help for Haiti. Click here to donate online.

2. Doctors Without Borders

Doctors Without Borders has already treated more than 1,000 people on the ground in Haiti following Tuesday's earthquake, but the needs are huge. An inflatable hospital with operating theatres is on its way now.

UNICEF has already shipped supplies for survivors of Haiti’s devastating earthquake and more shipments are on the way. UNICEF says: "Children are always the most vulnerable population in any natural disaster, and UNICEF is there for them."

1. The Girl and The Robot (Royksopp feat. Robyn)

Not only do I love Royksopp because they hail from northern Norway, but the duo also produces killer songs that are marvelous to dance to. Adding the uber-talented Robyn on this track is the cherry on top. This is definitely one of my current favorites.

2. Whyyawannabringmedown (Kelly Clarkson)

Clarkson's most recent release "All I Ever Wanted" is full of pop hits, but this high-energy track is a total standout. While the first true American Idol's voice is as strong as ever, gone is Clarkson's trademark power-ballad voice, and in is an edgier, raspier rocker voice. When she asks the guy in this song why he "wants to bring me down," I can't help but feel her aggression...perfect for the gym!

3. Brainwashed (Ultraviolet Sound)

Watch out for Ultraviolet Sound in the coming years, because I think they'll be huge. Brainwashed has a great beat and a pretty positive message for a dance track. Apparently, cheerleaders across America love using it in their routines. Bring it!

4. The Pretender (Foo Fighters)

An awesome workout song. It starts off slow, but don’t be fooled. The Foo Fighters can do no wrong.

5. Gimme More - Paul Oakenfold Remix (Britney Spears)

An excellent release from Ms. Spears is made even better by the dance master Mr. Paul Oakenfold. I never get tired of this song, and it gets my energy up whenever I need a kick.

6. 'Till I Collapse (Eminem & Nate Dogg)

While Eminem's huge hit "Lose Yourself" topped this song on the charts, I always preferred "Till I Collapse" as my go-to motivational song. Seriously, the beat, the lyrics (not child-appropriate, I might add) just get me pumped. Plus, the song's nearly five minutes long, so once it's over, a small chunk of my workout is complete. You can't have a workout playlist without this must-have in your collection.

7. Take It Off (Ke$ha)

Ke$ha is a new artist, and it's always nice to include a few “fresh” tracks, so the playlist doesn’t sound tired. I sometimes like to envision myself in the club that Ke$ha describes in this song. I've always wanted to go someplace where they go hardcore and there's glitter on the floor...

8. B.O.B. (Outkast)

B.O.B., Bombs Over Baghdad, is simply a masterpiece. The bouncing beat and fast-paced lyrical delivery from both Dre and Big Boi is just perfect for upping your energy while working out. This song, written prior to 2001, was written when Dre heard an anchor on a local newscast talk about the effects of the Gulf War and “bombs over Baghdad.” When you analyze the lyrics, the song isn’t so much about a war or dropping bombs, but it’s more about following through on your actions and finishing what you’ve started.

9. Friday (Daniel Bedingfield)

I miss Daniel Bedingfield. He made some great dance songs, and he needs to come out with more! “Friday” is all about him waiting for his girlfriend to come home. Bedingfield just does not know what to do with himself until his beloved returns, but his suffering is our entertainment.

10. Magnetic Baby (Semi Precious Weapons)

This is another song that is not kid-friendly, but it sure is workout-friendly! The ultra-glam lead singer, Justin Tranter, has been known to say that most of Semi Precious Weapons’ songs are all about how amazing he is, and, well, this song is no exception. What makes "Magnetic Baby" great is its tounge-in-cheek lyrics and chorus that makes you want to jump up and down. Plus, I really do believe that Tranter’s been magnetic since he was a baby…check them out live!

11. Fire Cracker (Ryan Adams)

This song is a long-time favorite, and it just goes to show you that you don’t always need dance music or straight rock to get motivated.

12. Broken City (Audioslave)

This is the perfect “strut” song. Just turn up the volume and do your best strut on the treadmill.

13. Love at First Sight (Kylie Minogue)

Probably my favorite Kylie song. Plus, after all these years, it still sounds futuristic and cutting-edge.

14. Smooth Criminal (Michael Jackson)

This song is a total classic. I have to restrain myself from replicating MJ’s dance moves from the music video while on the elliptical!

15. 4ever (The Veronica's)

These girls sure know how to produce energetic pop songs. This song's chorus will provide you with plenty of energy to push you through to the end of your workout.

16. If I Had You (Adam Lambert)

Here’s another track that is fresh on the scene. Lambert has a strong voice, and the song was produced by Max Martin of Britney Spears, ‘NSync, and Kelly Clarkson fame, so of course it’s got an awesome beat and hook.

Paul Nicklen - Polar Obsession

While some of us may feel as though we currently live in the arctic, imagine actually sitting outside in some of the most frigid and remote places on earth, waiting for hours at a time (over the course of several weeks, sometimes even months) for just the right moment to capture something truly exquisite.

Well, I’ve found a new obsession, and it’s acclaimed National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen’s latest book, Polar Obsession (National Geographic, $50).

Nicklen has captured some absolutely breathtaking images of the polar regions and their inhabitants. His book offers an unprecedented glimpse into the lives of polar bears, bearded seals, narwhals, leopard seals, whales and walruses. His images are captured both on land and underneath the freezing water.

Nicklen, born and raised on Baffin Island, Nunavut, grew up in one of the only non-Inuit families in a small settlement surrounded by the frigid environment of Northern Canada. He learned early on how to survive in extreme conditions and how to find shelter in a frozen landscape dominated by snow and ice. Nicklen credits the Inuit people for teaching him how to survive in the arctic, how to read the weather and, most importantly, how to be patient.

After graduating with a degree in marine biology from the University of Victoria, Nicklen spent several years working as a wildlife biologist in Northwest Territories, when he left for a three-month solo (!!) expedition into the high Arctic to live with the wolves, bears and Mother Nature. This trip confirmed an idea that he had been thinking about for years: he could better serve wildlife populations by becoming a photojournalist and document their way of life, as opposed to only studying them in a scientific sense as a biologist.

Nicklen has bridged the gap between scientific research and the public by producing compelling stories and photographs for the public at large. Through his work, we are able to see how these creatures live, and how global warming has already begun to impact their world.

I highly recommend Paul Nicklen’s books, which can be found on his website here. Polar Obsession is a perfect conversation starter for any party, and it stands very well on its own as an excellent collection of pictures and stories about a world most of us know so little about.
